Gresford Athletic finish their 2023/24 JD Cymru North campaign with a draw

Gresford Athletic finish their league campaign with a draw at home against Prestatyn Town on matchday 30 of the 2023/24 JD Cymru North on Friday night.

The game began with Gresford Athletic on the attack, with a good move seeing Charley Edge play a great ball to Dominic Deacon, who had his shot saved by Prestatyn Town goalkeeper Joe Lawlor in the second minute.

However, in just the 13th minute, Prestatyn Town found a crucial goal to their survival hopes, with Luke Wiltshire forcing the goal in the net.

The Seasiders found their flow for a while, almost doubling their lead in the 16th minute through William McKinley, who then also smashed the crossbar in the 26th minute to give Gresford Athletic a warning.

Dominic Deacon had a decent effort in the 32nd minute, but Prestatyn Town's Joe Lawlor made another good save to deny The Colliers' number nine.

Then, in the 41st minute, Nathan Williams played a great ball into the box to find Charley Edge, but he was just beaten to the ball by a Prestatyn Town defender.

The teams went in at half time with Prestatyn Town clutching their 1-0 lead, with Gresford Athletic looking ahead to try to find a way to equalise and hopefully turn things around to take the three points.

The second half started with another great moment for Gresford Athletic, as Charlie Mann made an unbeliveable run, weaving in and out of the Prestatyn Town defence, until his eventual shot was unable to find the back of the net in the 49th minute.

Prestatyn Town did look to continue to try to find goals, though, and in the 54th minute, they drove forward and had a good sliding effort on goal, but Lewis Dutton made a fantastic save to deny a second goal for The Seasiders.

Then, in the 56th minute, Dominic Deacon reaped the rewards of his hard work and scored the equalising goal for Gresford Athletic, putting away a good cross from Charley Edge to level things up.

It wasn't long before there was a second goal for Gresford Athletic, too, as Dominic Deacon tapped the ball into the net from a goalmouth scramble to net his second of the game in the 64th minute.

However, immediately after taking the lead, Prestatyn Town equalised in the 65th minute through former Gresford Athletic player Tom Weir on the rebound after his initial shot was saved by Lewis Dutton.

Somehow Gresford Athletic did not find the lead in the 72nd minute, as Charlie Mann was put in a perfect opportunity to tap the ball in from 10-yards out, but his shot went wide of the post.

Then, late in the game, Gresford Athletic had another opportunity to find a winner, but Joe Lawlor in the Prestatyn Town net made an unbeliveable save to deny the chance in the fourth minute of added time.

The game finished at 2-2, with Prestatyn Town securing survival in the JD Cymru North and Gresford Athletic feeling slightly dissappointed with not capitalising on some great chances to take all three points.

Dominic Deacon was voted as Gresford Athletic Man of the Match, putting in a great performance and scoring the two goals to secure a point to finish off the league campaign.
