Gresford Athletic put in a good shift at home against Newtown on matchday 11 of the 2025/26 JD Cymru North, but the away side take the three points on Friday night.
Before kick-off, both sets of players, staff and fans observed a minute's silence, with the game being the closest Gresford Athletic home game to Remembrance Day.
The first chance of the game fell to Newtown, but their 11th-minute effort went wide of the goal.
Then, in the 12th minute, Jake Roberts crossed the ball towards Paul Johnson, whose header went over the crossbar.
However, it was The Robins who took the lead in the 25th minute, as a good cross from Tom Jones fell to Robbie Evans to put it away with a diving header.
Jake Roberts spotted Newtown goalkeeper Dave Jones off his line in added time and tried his luck from range, but the ball went just wide.
HALF-TIME | Gresford Athletic 0-1 Newtown
The second half saw a Gresford Athletic who were doing all they could to win the game.
In the 50th minute, some great build-up from The Colliers resulted in a Iwan Roberts cross towards Toby Gallagher-Keenan, but the ball doesn't cross the line and referee Rhys Parry pulled it back for a handball.
Adam Hesp put his head and body on the line in the 54th minute to produce some superb defending to deny a dangerous Newtown chance.
Then, in the 57th minute, Tom Smith brought Gresford Athletic level with some fanastic footwork and a great strike.
However, Newtown did regain the lead in the 71st minute, as substitute Louis Jacobs fired it into the back of the net from the near-post, somewhat against the run of play.
Jake Roberts had a good effort from a free-kick, but his 76th-minute shot was saved by Dave Jones in the Newtown net.
It was almost another equaliser for The Colliers, with substitute Charlie Mann forcing a good save from Newtown's Jones from a decent effort in the 88th minute.
Newtown did find another chance just before full-time, with Lewis Dutton making a fantastic save in the 91st minute.
Then, just before the final whistle, a good long-ranged effort from first-half substitute Alex Buxton was deflected wide and The Robins managed to see out the win, despite plenty of questions asked by Gresford Athletic.
