Gresford Athletic Under 17s secured the 2024/25 North Wales Junior & Youth Football League title in style on Easter Sunday.
It was a 10-2 victory over local rivals Llay Miners Welfare Youth Under 17s that clinched the top spot, but it has been a phenomenal season for Manager Josh Leach, Coach Chris Rielly and all of the lads.
The 2024/25 campaign began with a 5-1 victory away against now-withdrawn Aston Park Rangers Under 17s, followed by a 6-0 win against Brickfield Rangers Under 17s on the road.
A first home game for the team ended in the only league defeat of the season, with Broughton United Under 17s Super Saints running out 2-1 winners at Clappers Lane, but the lads bounced right back with 19 goals in the next three games, all away from home.
The squad made it 11 wins in a row between September 2024 and February 2025, scoring 62 goals and keeping four clean sheets in what was the most impressive spell of the campaign for the side, until a draw with second-placed Chirk AAA Youth Under 17s made things interesting.
It was never in doubt that The Colliers would bounce back, though, and the squad responded with a 4-0 win against Brickfield Rangers Under 17s at home, before earning a close 2-1 victory against Mold Alexandra Under 17s and then securing big wins against Holywell Town Under 17s - with Oliver Tomkinson in goal - and Llay Miners Welfare Youth Under 17s to secure silverware with three league games to go, with chasers Chirk AAA Youth Under 17s falling to a defeat against Lex Under 17s.
Sam Bryan's goalscoring ability has been undeniable since joining the club in the summer of 2024, bagging 23 league goals in just 15 appearances and ensuring he earns himself the Golden BooT.
Alex Cooper, Charlie Keay and Rhys Evans all also hit double figures in the league, with another 10 of the squad popping up with goals throughout the season.
Creativity from Louie Rielly, Oscar Synnerdahl-Evans, Harry Williams, Oliver Tomkinson, Rhys Jones and Konstantin "Titi" Kostadinov have been crucial to the success of the side, providing opportunities for goals from midfield.
Dion Kelly cemented himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the division, keeping seven clean sheets in 17 league games, with help from an impressive selection of defenders, including Matthew Roberts, Morgan Williams, Jonnie Vernon and Abdoulie Njie.
All of the lads' ability has shone through during the entire year, with every player from the Under 17s side making appearances for the Reserves team, either in Pre-Season or in the season itself, as well as plenty of First Team inclusion for Sam Bryan, Alex Cooper, Dion Kelly, Konstantin "Titi" Kostadinov and Rhys Evans during the campaign.
However, whilst the league title has been wrapped up, there are still three more games to go, continuing with Broughton United Under 17s Super Saints on Tuesday 22nd April 2025 at Clappers Lane, where the lads will lift the 2024/25 North East Wales Junior & Youth Under 17s League trophy at full-time.
As well as the league, the team also have a North East Wales Junior & Youth Under 17s League Cup Final to look forward to, facing Lex Under 17s on 4th May 2025 at Stansty Park.
Congratulations on an unbelievable season, lads! Keep up the excellent work!
