It is with much sadness that we have to bring you news today of death of lifetime Gresford Athletic supporter Dennis Harris –father of club secretary Steve Harris.
Dennis of course will be best remembered to many of us as a cherished founder member of Codgers Corner but the part he played in village life was so commendable and you will see this quite clearly from our little tribute.. He had battled for manymonths with a lung disease which finally took its toll just over a week ago and he leaves a loving family in Bella his wife, sons Steve and David and their respective wivesRozand Toni together with grandchildren Gavin,Iwanand Georgia.
He had only recently enjoyed his 80thbirthday last September but what he managed to pack into his life time was quite amazing. By trade he was a draftsman which is much a dying art these days. He was born in the village of Gresford and educated at ourlocal Gresford school. Following national service he studied at Denbighshire Technical College to gain his engineering qualifications and he spent all of his working life in the manufacturing sector and spent happy spells atCrosville, De-Havilland, Williams and Williams, Brymbo Steelworks andCrostonEngineering. Although he retired when he was 65 –he could not put that “draughtingboard”down and even then for a long while he continued to work 2 days per week.
Dennis had a long and extensive list of hobbies but three in particular he was particularly committed too. He had a long association with the Gresford Scouts and it is well known he was our Gresford Scouts Group Leader for many many years which was rewarded with the prestigious scout movement Silver Acorn award.
He had a long association with the village cricket club which really was his first love. Although an eye injury prevented him from playing cricket, he spent countless hours in a non playing capacity and for far too many years to mention he was the official Gresford scorer.
Later in life he enjoyed his time down at the Pant-Yr-OchainFarm where he was involved with our local Model Engineering Club, during his time with the club he served as Treasurer for well in excess of 10 years.
The word legend is used for too frequently nowadays but I don’t think there is a living soul in our community who might disagree with the statement –Dennis Harris, you were a legend and you will be considerably missed and were one of life’s perfect gentlemen !!!!!
Dennis’s funeral is being held on Monday 25thJanuary at 11:30 at Wrexham Crematorium
