Gresford Athletic progress through to the third round of the 2023/24 JD Welsh Cup

Gresford Athletic progress through to the third round of the 2023/24 JD Welsh Cup after beating Llanidloes Town away in round two on Friday Night.

The first real chance for Gresford Athletic came in the 14th minute of the game, wehn Haci Ozlu had an early effort, which is saved by Llanidloes Town goalkeeper Luke Evans.

Llanidloes Town did show their threat during the game and, in the 16th minute, their close-range effort went over the crossbar in what was a real let-off for Gresford Athletic.

However, it was the 19th minute when Gresford Athletic found the breakthrough when Simon Smith did well to win the ball high up the pitch and play a great ball to Toby Gallagher-Keenan, who placed it home to make it 1-0.

James Smith did really well to fly forward, play a good one-two with Toby Gallagher-Keenan, and have a decent effort, but it went just wide in the 26th minute.

Mike Jones was then called upon late on in the second half, pulling off a fantastic 38th-minute save to deny Llanidloes Town an equaliser and the score remained 1-0 at the break.

Gresford Athletic almost found their second goal instantly at the start of the second half when substitute Charlie Mann got onto the end of a Simon Smith free-kick and had a decent effort from far out, but it went over the crossbar.

Haci Ozlu was next to have a chance for Gresford Athletic, as the ball was played forward for him to have a great touch and hit the ball towards goal, but Llanidloes Town's Luke Evans parried the ball away.

Simon Smith and Toby Gallagher-Keenan did link up again, though, and in the 66th minute, the former played a great ball into the middle of the box and the latter volleying it first-time into the bottom corner to double Gresford Athletic's lead.

Substitute Sam Spridgeon then added to the scoreline in the 72nd minute, when he got on the end of Haci Ozlu's pass, controlled the ball, turned and fired it into the top corner to make it 3-0.

Gresford Athletic went down to 10 men in the 85th minute when Nathan Williams received a second yellow card for a bad tackle and was sent off.

Llanidloes Town did capitalise on the extra man, pulling a goal back in the 87th minute through Jamie Breese, but it was too late for The Daffs to find a comeback and the game ended 3-0 with Gresford Athletic ensuring they are in the hat for the third round of the 2023/24 JD Welsh Cup.

Toby Gallagher-Keenan was voted Gresford Athletic Man of the Match after he had a great performance and also scored two goals to top it off.
