Gresford Athletic go through to the second round of the 2023/24 JD Welsh Cup

Gresford Athletic progressed to the second round of the 2023/24 JD Welsh Cup after beating Radnor Valley away on Saturday.

The first half started with Gresford Athletic looking for an early opener, with Dominic Deacon forcing himself through on goal in the 12th minute, but the Radnor Valley goalkeeper Otto Jones did well to come out and make a tackle.

Then, Charley Edge's 14th-mintue corner fell to Harvey Ellis, whose shot was saved by Radnor Valley's Otto Jones.

Charlie Mann put in another good corner in the 19th minute, which reached Dominic Deacon, but his header hit the crossbar.

In the 21st minute, Adam Hesp played a brilliant ball forward to Toby Gallagher-Keenan, but, again, Otto Jones made the save for Radnor Valley.

Adam Hesp then did well to head the ball down to Harvey Ellis on the edge of the area, but his shot went just wide in the 26th minute.

Charley Edge had two good chances in the 29th minute and 33rd minute, with the latter coming directly from a free-kick, but Radnor Valley goalkeeper Otto Jones kept making saves.

However, James Smith finally gave Gresford Athletic the lead in the 37th minute, getting on the end of a scramble in the box to tap it into the net, which ensured the score was 1-0 to The Colliers going into the half time break.

Gresford Athletic came fast out of the blocks at the start of the second half, with Toby Gallagher-Keenan quickly doubling the lead in the 49th minute after Haci Ozlu did well to dribble through the Radnor Valley defence to create the chance.

Haci Ozlu, Toby Gallagher-Keenan and Nathan Williams continued to play some great football in the 54th minute, with the latter playing a great ball across goal, but nobody was on the end to finish it off.

James Smith did make it 3-0 to Gresford Athletic in the 59th minute, though, scoring his second goal of the game by heading the ball into the bottom left corner from a Charley Edge cross.

Radnor Valley started a dangerous attack in the 68th minute, which meant Nathan Williams was called upon to make a great tackle to keep the clean sheet.

Substitute Alex Buxton then had a shot from long range in the 75th minute, looking to add to the scoreline, but it went just over the crossbar.

In the 77th minute, Radnor Valley did have a chance to pull one back after they were rewarded a penalty after a Nathan Williams handball in the box, but Joseph Price's shot from 12 yards went over the bar.

At the other end, Haci Ozlu managed to pick up the ball in the box from an Alex Buxton tackle and smashed it into the back of the net to score a fourth for Gresford Athletic.

In the last 10 minutes, there was a good moment for the club, which saw Gresford Athletic Reserves players Jardel, Leonardo Almeida - both making their First Team debuts - and George Yarwood substituted onto the pitch to finish the game.

George Yarwood did actually have the ball in the back of the net in the 85th minute, but it was unfortunately ruled out as James Smith was in an offiside position.

The game ended at 4-0 to Gresford Athletic and progression into the second round of the 2023/24 JD Welsh Cup, after a good game against Radnor Valley.

James Smith was voted as Gresford Athletic Man of the Match after a good performance, with two goals to show for it.
