Gresford Athletic earn an important away win against Llandudno

Gresford Athletic earned an important 3-2 win against Llandudno away on matchday 18 of the 2023/24 JD Cymru North on Saturday.

The game started brilliantly for Gresford Athletic, with Haci Ozlu doing extremely well to dribble with the ball and play it to Dominic Deacon, who layed it off to Toby Gallagher-Keenan, but his close-range shot went over the crossbar in the third minute.

However, Gresford Athletic did find an opener in the ninth minute, with Charley Edge placing the ball into the top corner from an excellent free-kick just outside of the area.

Charley Edge almost found his second goal of the game in the 31st minute, but Llandudno goalkeeper Michael Jones pushed the ball onto the crossbar.

Then, in the 32nd minute, Alex Buxton fired the ball towards goal, but could not find a second goal for Gresford Athletic, as his effort rattled the woodwork and not too long after, the half time whistle blew as The Colliers went in with a 1-0 lead.

The second half did not start how Gresford Athletic would have wanted, as Llandudno's Stevan Stanic-Floody netted the equaliser for Llandudno after a scramble in the box in the 56th minute.

Then, disasterously, Llandudno took the lead in the 71st minute, with substitute Fabrizio Murtas grabbing the goal after dribbling through the Gresford Athletic defence.

However, it was not long until Gresford Athletic got themselves back level pegging, with Joe Chaplin scoring with a great effort just 12 minutes after he was substituted onto the pitch.

Gresford Athletic looked to find a goal to regain the lead and in the 76th minute, substitute Charlie Mann found space on the left-hand side with some excellent dribbling and forced a save from Llandudno's Michael Jones.

In the 79th minute, Gresford Athletic found a third goal, as Joe Chaplin bagged his brace with a spectacular first-time shot into the back of the net to push The Colliers back in front.

Just before the final whistle, debutant Lewis Dutton pulled off a great save to ensure that Llandudno did not find their trademark late goal and ensured Gresford Athletic kept hold of their lead.

The full time whistle blew and Gresford Athletic earned their first three points of 2024 after a tough game against an energetic Llandudno.

Joe Chaplin was voted as Gresford Athletic Man of the Match with a great performance and, of course, scored a brace to claim the win.
