Gresford Athletic earn their first league win of the 2023/24 season

Gresford Athletic earned their first JD Cymru North win of the 2023/24 season at home against Llanidloes Town on matchday six on Friday.

Both teams, officials and fans observed a minute's silence ahead of kick off, in memory of the Gresford Colliery Disaster, which occurred 89 years ago on the day of the game.

The first half began and Gresford Athletic looked to take the lead early on, with a good Simon Smith cross finding the head of Toby Gallagher-Keenan, but his header went just over the crossbar in the seventh minute.

However, Haci Ozlu continued his great goalscoring form and gave Gresford Athletic an early lead in the ninth minute after he picked up the ball in the box.

Charley Edge looked to extend the lead in the 23rd minute, but his shot from outside area went over the crossbar. He then had another effort from a free-kick in the 31st minute, but it went just wide.

Simon Smith then came close in the 33rd minute with a great strike, but it smacked the crossbar.

However, Dominic Deacon was the one to find the second goal for Gresford Athletic in the 38th minute, tapping in Adam Hesp's header, which ensured a 2-0 lead going into the half time break.

The second half continued Gresford Athletic and Dominic Deacon's goalscoring, as he found his second goal of the game in the 50th minute with a calm finish to make it 3-0.

Dominic Deacon made a fantastic run down the left in the 66th minute and put a good cross into the box, aiming for Alex Buxton, but he was not able to get on the end of it to tap it into the net.

However, in the 70th minute, Charley Edge scored a brilliant goal from a well-placed free-kick into the bottom corner to score a fourth for Gresford Athletic.

Llanidloes Town started to come back into the game in the last half an hour and James Smith made a great block in the 74th minute to stop a dangerous effort.

Gresford Athletic continued to try to find more goals, though, and substitute Jack Roberts tried his luck from far out in the 80th minute, but Llanidloes Town goalkeeper Luke Evans made the save.

The Daffs quickly looked to make it 4-1 in the 81st minute, but their effort hit the post as a warning to Gresford Athletic.

In the 87th minute, though, Llanidloes Town did manage to find a way through, pulling a goal back late on in the game with a great strike from Dewi Allen.

Charlie Mann did look to add a fifth for Gresford Athletic in the 93rd minute, putting the ball into the net off the post from an angled effort, but it was ruled out for offside.

Charlie Mann then had the same chance a minute later, but this time played the ball across goal. However, nobody was on the end of it in the box to finish it off.

The final whistle was blown and a 4-1 scoreline for Gresford Athletic ensured their first league win of the 2023/24 season.

Charley Edge was named Man of the Match for Gresford Athletic after putting in a great performance and scoring a fantastic free-kick, too.
